PEAK POSE SEQUENCING & BEYOND:
Teaching Strength & Skill
An Online, Self-Paced Continuing Education Course
A peak pose is not built in a single class – it is developed over weeks, months, and
even years through
systematic practice.
PEAK POSE
SEQUENCING & BEYOND:
Teaching Strength & Skill
Creating a peak pose sequence is not simply breaking down a pose and placing a few “prep poses” before the final posture.
While preparation in a single class is certainly important, truly preparing students for more complex postures takes strength and skill-building, and an overall deeper understanding of how the body moves within the common movement patterns.
This course explores how to design classes that progressively develop the strength, mobility, coordination, and movement patterns students need to safely and confidently approach more challenging postures.
You’ll learn how to identify the physical skills required for a pose and integrate those skills into your classes long before the peak posture ever appears.
You will learn how to:
- Break down any peak pose by identifying the underlying movement patterns, strength demands, and mobility requirements.
- Develop class plans that create foundational skills and strength, preparing students for more complex poses.
- Build long-term progressions that gradually develop student capacity rather than expecting instant results.
- Layer foundational movements into regular classes so students continuously improve.
- Sequence intentionally to strengthen the body instead of simply stretching it.
- Recognize common compensation patterns and teach students to move with greater control and efficiency.
- Communicate progressions through clear, precise verbal cueing that helps students understand not just what to do, but how to do it.
- Teach a complex pose so that all students, no matter the level of experience, feel included and are given options.
Whether your goal is to teach arm balances, inversions, binds, or backbends, this course provides a functional framework for creating classes that develop capable, skillful students – not just classes that culminate in an impressive pose.
Peak poses should not be the destination. But instead, they result from consistently teaching strength, skill, and intentional movement.
This course is broken into two units of study:
-Teaching for Strength & Skill
We shift the focus from achieving shapes to developing skills. Poses are simply expressions of underlying skills. When students learn the underlying skill, that skill transfers to numerous other poses and movement patterns. We will cover the 10 key movement patterns in yoga, the difference between teaching movement vs. shapes, and how to use foundational poses as skill-builders.
-Building Practitioners, Not Poses
Rather than asking, “What creative sequence can I teach today?”, we begin with a more impactful question: “What am I helping my students build?”
Intentional sequencing means creating a class plan with a purpose rather than novelty.
Though creativity has value, student development depends more on consistency and progressive learning than on constant variation. Instead of viewing the class as a series of poses, we will explore it as a progression of learning experiences.
Skillfully leading a class requires more than planning a great sequencing and memorizing it. To be truly present and connected, a teacher must be able to observe and respond. Along with a review of basic cueing techniques, you will learn methods for teaching complex poses using clear, progressive instructions that help students build a pose step by step while maintaining confidence and grounded in the realities of the class.
You will learn the 5-step formula for designing a class around a specific pose, while offering skill-building lessons that span across all yoga practices.
This unit covers how to deconstruct complex poses by identifying their anatomical actions and movement patterns, and how to integrate them into a vinyasa arc-style sequence that accommodates all levels without breaking the flow of the class.
